will spankie

Will’s current work is concerned with the essence of things, their qualities and the stone itself. He is interested in the geometric structures, patterns, symmetry and proportion found both in nature and in the unfolding of numbers in space. He enjoys the ambiguity in a sculpture, hints of other things and the manipulation of the material to capture an ephemeral moment in stone.

I enjoy the process of working stone and feel this process is central to what I produce – things happen in their making which often surprise me.

Following his studies at Central Saint Martins in London, Will began his career as a stone carver and letter-cutter, taking public art commissions alongside work with garden and interior designers. He also teaches stone carving in schools, colleges and prisons, and enjoys working collaboratively with other artists. Will’s work as a stone carver has lent his sculpture a uniquely local context. His primary material is Jurassic limestone, which he sources near his home in East Sussex.
