marcus harris

Half Egyptian, half English, Marcus draws in his work from his early experiences in Egypt and later in the West. Often beginning with the simplicity of recognisable forms, as part of his process he looks at the ways in which they can digress, devolve and change, employing what he calls the ‘onomatopoeia of line’. He seeks to convey an energetic expression through his carvings and invites the viewer to participate in this by experiencing the sculptures through touch.

As an undergraduate, Marcus studied Art Theory in London before moving to New York to attend the School of Visual Arts. He has worked as a photographic artist, showing work all over the world, and often visits family in Egypt, which is for him a place of memory and inspiration. Marcus’s stone sculptures have been exhibited in London and occupy places in permanent collections in the UK and the US.
