Tania Mosse

Tania Mosse was born in 1958 in Kilkenny, Ireland, where she grew up surrounded by Celtic crosses and standing stones. After studying at Leeds College of Art and Goldsmiths College, London, she now lives and works in Mid Wales, where her practice includes stone carving as well as letter cutting. She has exhibited widely, from the Netherlands, Dublin and Edinburgh to London, though this is the first time she has shown with on form.

Tania is fascinated by the detail of the natural world, by the voids and recurring patterns in organic matter and in-between states such as pupae and larvae. Her studio shelves may be laden with seed pods and dried marine animals, but she is not interested in remaking them; her final forms are deliberately neither one thing nor another – they have a life of their own.

I look for stone that is lively, that bears witness to years of erosion or the accumulation of mineral deposits. Sometimes the stone itself will lead me on, or a detail in a natural object will trigger an idea.
