Bridget McCrum

Bridget McCrum’s lifelong fascination with ancient artefacts finds an imaginative outlet in her own sculpture. The severely simplified stone carvings of prehistoric cultures have been a source of inspiration, as have the condensed shapes of Cycladic art, and the lucidly economical work of Constantin Brancusi. McCrum trained as a painter with Lesjek Muszynski at Farnham College of Art in the 1950s, and later learned to carve with John Joekus and Andrea Schulewitz on the South Downs. Many of McCrum’s subjects are based on birds or animals, although the original shape and movement of each piece may be suggested by ancient objects shaped for very different purposes.
