Guy Stevens

Guy Stevens was born in 1971. He completed a Fine Art Painting at Chelsea School of Art in 1994. During his degree he spent much of his time developing multi media projects, using video, photography, live performance and installation exploring the notion of ‘self’. In 2001, Guy discovered and taught himself to carve stone, early figurative carvings gradually gave way to more abstracted simple forms. Guy is now a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, has undertaken a number of public art commissions and exhibits widely in the UK.

It is through stone that I have fully found a means of expressing myself both conceptually and physically. As a sculptor I see my job as doing justice to the potential and energy in a piece of stone and let the journey take its course. My approach could be described as ‘automatic’. I have a rough idea for a work and then let it happen, seeing what I can make the stone do, feeling my way to the creation that exists in the back of my mind. I love discovering and sourcing my material. I hope to give the viewer the same sense of voyage, process and emotion I have felt in its creation.
